Scrolling through my Facebook Newsfeed this morning, an
article my friend Keyzy posted caught my eye (“The 9 Laws Of E-Cigarettiquette:
A Handy Guide For E-Cigarette Smokers”). “Ooh great”, I thought “now here’s
something that looks useful.” And then I notice, even better it’s from The
Business Insider – a credible source. When I click on the link I see some fun
black and white sketches. This looks pretty cool. I can’t wait to see what
useful tips this article will offer.
So I start reading #9. “Puffing on your e-cigarette at the
movies is not allowed.” C’mon, you’re joking, right? This must be a joke. The
complaint on this one is the LED of the ecig is distracting. This guy has
obviously never used a stealth batt. Perfect for the movies!
Moving on to #8. “Do not vape at the dinner table.” As long
as you clear this with your dinner mates and restaurant staff, you’re good to
go. In my experience, most people are okay with it and don’t even blink an eye.
#7 “Refrain from vaping in an open office.”Now I KNOW this
article is a joke. He must be pointing out all the things you can do with ecigs
that you can’t with real cigarettes. The thing about using ecigs at work is
that you are saving your employer time. Think about it. When you take a smoke
break you have to go get your smokes, and coat. You have to walk to the smoking
section, which of course is never right outside the door. You smoke your cig,
about 10 minutes or so. Add another 5 to 10 minutes for socializing. Then walk
back inside, put away your coat and pack of cigs. And finally walk back to your
work station. So let me get this straight, the author would rather continue
acting like a smoker, than explain to his boss and office mates how ecigs
work, and what’s in them? Sure, makes sense to me. Not.
#5 “Vaping isn’t for quitters!” While I agree with this, as
ecigs are meant as an alternative to smoking, his reason and mine are
completely different. Chris’ reason is that you make vapers look bad when you
go back to smoking. What? For real? What about people who are just starting out
vaping and don’t immediately take to it? Sure, there are tons of people who
pick up an ecig and never look back. What about them? What about people who
only use ecigs when its freezing cold and they don’t want to go outside? You
actually can use cigs and ecigs at the same time. (Not both in your mouth at
once of course.) I mean, some people take time getting used to ecigs. They’ll
smoke a real one, and the next hour go to their vape. They switch back and
forth and then can make a full switch after time.
When I get to the end, out of the 9 e-cigaretteiquettes,
there are only two I actually agree with. #3 and #1. These two are kind of
obvious. Of course you shouldn’t look down on smokers. And I don’t think many
vapers do. All they really want to do is help as many people as possible switch
over. #1 is about littering. Again, that’s a fine rule and should be on this
list. But, he should have gone into the fact that cigarettes are the most
polluted item, and the fact that rechargeable ecig batts are better for the
environment because they can be reused. A lot of people also reuse carts again
and again, which is better than cigarettes that have a one-time use.
This article does nothing for the industry. In fact, I think
it actually hurts. All these things mentioned is stuff we as vapers love about
vaping. You CAN do it anywhere, and we should be trying to promote that fact,
not stifling it away. While we can’t force acceptance, we should try to educate
people. There are SO many amazing things about ecigs, and this so-called “handy
guide for e-cigarette smokers” (which actually by the way is incorrect term
because ecigs don’t burn so they can’t smoke) is saying that ecigs should be
treated the same as real cigarettes. Dude needs to wake up. I think I’ll send
him some “This is not a cigarette.” and “Spread the Word” cards so he can pass
them out to people he meets. He won’t even have to talk to, or explain vaping
with anyone!
It’s really hard to belive the author is a vaper. I just
can’t see it. What do you think? Do you agree with these “laws” or think it’s a
bunch of bologna?
