Can Electronic Cigarettes Spark a Real Fire??

electronic cigarettes might have a flaw. There have been several mentions in the news lately on how certain electronic cigarettes are sparking fires while charging in people’s cars and homes.

Channel Five, CBS, in Phoenix reported how a Smokein T Electronic Cigarette caused a fire at a local home on Monday, September 2nd.

Buy Electronic Cigarettes OnlineThe homeowner, Stephen Shopshire, told CBS-5 that a smoke detector woke them up when his electronic cigarette caught fire on the other side of the wall from where him and his wife were sleeping. The Smokein T Company has offered to replace his electronic cigarette according to Shopshire, but he has declined.
Shopshire told CBS-5, "I think I'm done smoking, in general, because the regular cigarette can kill me via cancer and this can kill me and my family by a fire.”

This is not the first story that has come up with an electronic cigarette causing a fire. There was a case in the Valley and in Salt Lake City where the cigarette became too hot while charging in the car and the drivers had to throw them out of the vehicle.

The fire marshal in Binghamton, NY declared that an accidental fire was started by an electronic cigarette being left on the charger and the home received heavy smoke and water damage.

There was an incident with a Grant Park woman who stated her E-Hit electronic cigarette shot flames 4 feet across the room while it was plugged into her USB port of her computer. The local store she bought the cigarette from has stopped carrying the brand and replaced her electronic cigarette with a new brand.

Electronic cigarettes have a low voltage battery, so the chances of a fire are rare. There is no known problem with the electronic cigarette batteries in the industry and some cases could be a result of owner negligence.
An important factor to look at with these fires is how long the electronic cigarettes were plugged in, which was not stated in any of the news reports. Leaving any electronic device plugged into long can be dangerous and cause a fire. Leaving a device plugged in overnight to charge while sleeping or out would not be recommended.
