The world of electronics was transformed with the invention
of rechargeable batteries. No longer do
you have to lug around spare batteries or change batteries every few hours,
simply plug it into the mains and voila your device has power. Old news I know - kids growing up nowadays
probably find the concept of having to change the batteries in your CD player a
bit alien but for those who remember having to change batteries will remember
what a pain it was. So how are we now
utilising rechargeable batteries in a way that we might not have expected a few
years ago?
Electric Cars
The concept of just plugging your car into a mains socket
and then the next day being able to drive it is something akin to what you
might have seen on the Jetsons as a child.
Nowadays electric cars are getting more and more popular as car charging
ports are popping up across major cities like London where you can recharge a
car for free. So not only is it more
environmentally friendly but is a hell of alot cheaper than having to fill the
tank on your petrol guzzling car.
Electronic Cigarettes
A cigarette that runs on electricity? That is some serious future stuff there, but
in the present day! There are loads of
companies out there producing and distributing electronic cigarettes whether
that be through pharmacies or simply online distributors like Ex Cig from sites
like www.excig.com. The electricity is
used to power the atomiser that produces the sensation (and water vapour that
looks like smoke) of smoking.

The great
thing is that you don’t have to turn them on or off - as soon as you start
taking a drag from an e-cig it just works.
What’s more is that the battery within the e-cigarette can be recharged
and not just through the mains - you can also plug it into any computer with a
USB drive and charge it through that.
Genius! In fact it is not just
e-cigarettes that can be charged through USB drives but it is a good example of
how we are using rechargeable batteries in a way that people might not have
thought a few years ago. As such, you no
longer have to worry too much when your e-cigarette starts to run out of
juice. Just find a socket or a computer
and give it a quick shot of electricity!
Toothbrushes
Whoever thought that simple toiletries would end up being
charged? Electric toothbrushes - either you love them or hate them. The charging docks are pretty neat though -
no obvious plug that goes into the toothbrush, just a dock of sorts that ends
up charging your toothbrush ready for it’s next use. I heard of one £250 toothbrush that simply
has a glass as your toothbrush holder and somehow the glass is the charging
dock. I found that to be pretty amazing.
Rechargeable batteries will carry on getting longer and
longer battery lives as people demand better quality products. Who knows, maybe in 30 years the internal
combustion engine will be defunct and all modes of transport will be
electric. Maybe the tobacco cigarette
will be replaced by these electronic wizard cigarettes. Predicting the future is a precarious task,
but I am confident that batteries will get better and better, and be used in
more and more stuff.
