Social networking is continuing to be the hottest computing
craze, and it seems everyone wants to get in on the game and capitalize on it.
So it might not come as a surprise that electronic cigarettes are trying to get
in on the action. A new app, built directly into the electronic cigarette packs
themselves is designed to make it easier for e-cig users to find each other,
with the device lighting up and/or vibrating when another user is within 50
feet of you. E-cig maker Blu also has plans to expand the social app to tether
to smartphones to allow even more social features in the very near future.
Smokers have long
believed that smoking is a way to engage with other people. They're partly
right. While smoking has sometimes alienated others who don't like being around
cigarette smoke, it provides a reason to go stand with other smokers and strike
up conversations. With smoking bans becoming more restrictive than ever,
smokers are turning increasingly to electronic cigarettes. E-cigs, as they're
known, are paving the way to become the next big social network.
Considering the rampant success of social networking, it's
no surprise that product manufacturers are constantly looking for new ways to
jump on this “smoking hot” bandwagon. Social networking has insinuated itself
into every aspect of our lives. It's on our computers as we work. We take it
with us on our cell phones. We use Facebook and Twitter to tell people where we
are, what we're doing, and what we like. LinkedIn keeps us engaged professionally.
We learn about what our friends, family, and our industries are up to, do
business with them, and play games using social media.

E-Cig Manufacturer Blu Plans to Incorporate Social Media
Blu, a leading electronic cigarette manufacturer, may have
discovered a way to capitalize on social media and bring value to customers'
lives. Until recently, meeting people through social media was awkward at best,
and downright creepy at worst. Online dating sites introduce people who want to
meet others, but people who aren't looking for love cringe at the thought of
unwanted friend requests accompanied by a message saying, “I like your pics.
Let's meet.” Ew!
Now, e-cigs allow smokers to recognize other people who use
smoke-free cigarettes when they're out in a restaurant, spending time at a
park, or watching a concert. Although they're discreet, e-cigs that use the
social networking ap vibrate to signal when another vaper is within fifty feet
of them. (Vaper refers to someone who enjoys the vapor created by e-cigarettes,
which don't actually produce smoke.)
These high-tech e-cigs introduce opportunities for same-sex
friendships and romantic possibilities to blossom into enduring relationships.
How They Work
Blu's starter pack that features social networking
capability resembles a traditional pack of cigarettes. Its size and feel are
similar, but unlike a traditional pack, this one monitors the unit's battery
charge and allows vapers to turn the social function on or off so they aren't
disturbed when they'd rather not be.
When it's on, the pack sends a signal - a vibration or
discreet light, to alert owners who are interested in meeting people to look
for the tell-tale LED light that signals when an e-cig's being used. They get a
chance to observe the person discreetly from a distance before deciding if
they'd like to strike up a conversation with them, which is easy since they
have something in common already. “I noticed that we are both using these.
What's your favorite flavor?”
It's too early to predict whether e-cigs will prove to be
the new wave of dating and making friends by wedding social networking with
smokeless cigarettes, but it seems they may be onto something big.
