What are E-Cigarettes and are they safer than tobacco cigarettes?

As more electronic cigarette retailers establish themselves in central Pennsylvania, more questions about the product's effectiveness are arising nationwide.

Dave Norris was a pack-a-day smoker, until he tried e-cigarettes.

"I tell you it's a great alternative to smoking a cigarette."

Now Norris believes in e-cigs so much, he became a supplier, running Blue Door Vaping in Mechanicsburg.

"Some of the big money people are saying it could become a billion dollar industry by the end of the year and growing by leaps and bounds on top of that."

Dave demonstrated to me how an e-cig works. "Basically you're going to bring power to that device which is going to heat up the liquid inside and create the vapor. That vapor delivers your flavor and delivers your nicotine."

The product comes in hundreds of different flavors, with varying levels of nicotine.

But here's the major drawback, at least according to the Food and Drug Administration.  No one knows the long term effects. That's one of the biggest reasons why the FDA hasn't approved electronic cigarettes as a smoking alternative. 

Dr. Jonathan Foulds at Penn State College of Medicine after initially thinking the product was a gimmick, said this:

"They are continuing to be popular and at least some smokers appear to find them helpful. However, we just don't have enough information on their long-term safety and effectiveness for clinicians to recommend them."

Dave Norris, on the other hand, thinks he does have reason to recommend them.

"Three months after I quit smoking I went to my family doctor. His comments to me were your cholesterol is down your blood pressure is down, what are these e-cigs?

Pennsylvania currently allows you to use electronic cigarettes in most places where smoking is prohibited. The FDA has given no time table as to when they may make a ruling on them.

No smoke, Big tobacco butts into e-cigs

If you can’t beat them, join them.

Lorillard became the first major tobacco maker to buy an electronic cigarette make yesterday, announcing a $135 million acquisition of blu ecigs.

This follows news this month that buyout firm Catterton Partners invested $20 million in rival Soterra, which makes NJOY, to help it get in big box chains including Walmart.

In a statement, blu ecigs, based in Charlotte, NC, said the sale “gives us access to the tremendously experienced team and resources at Lorillard and will allow us to move to the next level on our expansion.”

Electronic cigarettes, which typically have nicotine but no tobacco, are a roughly $500 million business in the US, but they are smoked by the $100 billion in revenue generated by cigarettes, said Ray Story, head of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association.

But e-smokes are much faster growing — which likely sparked the acquisition by Lorillard, maker of Newport and Kent cigarettes.

Lorillard, the maker of Newport brand cigs, saw its shares tumble 3.9 percent yesterday after it reported first-quarter profit missed Wall Street estimates.

Profits were hurt by a downturn in revenue and demand — something the company tied, in part, to the downturn in the economy.

The company, in a statement, said it was confident it could deliver “double digit total shareholder return as measured by earnings per share growth and dividend yield” — although some on Wall Street are skeptical.

At least now, to help the country’s No. 3 cigarette maker from getting its ash kicked, it can lean on its e-smokes operation to prop up revenue.

Shares in the Greensboro, NC, company fell 3.9 percent, or $5.29, to at $129.53.

E-smokes no joke

 It’s enough to make Joe Camel cry.

Reynolds American, the No. 2 US cigarette maker, announced plans yesterday to roll out a national e-cigarette brand — as sales of traditional tobacco smokes continue to slip.

Reynolds, whose brands include Camels and Pall Mall, said its e-cig brand, Vuse, would roll out first in Colorado in July and then in other states.

The move comes as sales of tobacco-based smokes fell 4.5 percent in the first quarter, according to a Morgan Stanley report.

Meanwhile, e-cig sales are forecast to double in 2013, to about $1 billion.

While e-cig revenue pales in comparison to the $80 billion traditional cigarette market, at least its sales, so to speak, are on fire.

Revenue at Reynolds American has been relatively flat at about $8.4 billion since at least 2009 — and is expected to see little increase through 2014, according to Wall Street estimates.

So as America falls out of love with Joe Camel, Reynolds, it would appear, had little choice but to jump into the e-cig business.

“Vuse has been designed to offer the affordability and convenience of a disposable e-cigarette, while providing ongoing cost savings and reduced environmental impact by being rechargeable,” Stephanie Cordisco, president of R.J. Reynolds Vapor Company, a unit of RAI, said.

They are priced at the equivalent of $3 a pack — well below the $11-a-pack cost of regular smokes.

E-cigs contain no tobacco and convert heated, nicotine-laced liquid into a vapor mist.

Users can have a puff indoors without causing a stink.

Reynolds, at a press conference yesterday in New York, would not disclose profit projections or even give plans for rolling out Vuse nationwide.

Vuse will be sold over-the-counter at drugstores in single packs called Solos, which would include a cartridge, a rechargeable power unit and a USB charger. 

The Vuse System pack would contain three cartridges. The cartridges, which come in original and menthol flavors, would also be sold in packs of two.

“We designed Vuse to be as familiar as necessary and as different as possible,” Cordisco said.

Rival Lorillard bought the Blu brand of e-cigs last year. Altria is expected to introduce an e-cig brand later in 2013.

With its e-cig brand, which is not affected by the advertising ban on traditional smokes, Reynolds expects to return to TV advertising for the first time in more than 30 years.

Daan Delen, president and CEO of Reynolds American, speaking at a press event at Chelsea Piers, said that about 30 percent of adult tobacco consumers have tried an e-cig in the last six months.

“They’re trying, but few are converting,” Delen said.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs concluded last year that e-cigs have the potential to be an industry game-changer. 

Bonnie Herzog, an analyst at Wells Fargo, said earlier this year sales of e-cigs could surpass traditional smokes in 10 years.

More and more kids are smoking e-cigarettes: study

E-cigarette use has doubled among middle- and high-school kids — and experts fear the devices are creating a new generation of smokers rather than helping people kick the habit.

With flavors like chocolate and “cherry crush” and endorsements from such celebs as Jenny McCarthy and Courtney Love, electronic cigarettes are rising in popularity among young people.

“The increased use of ­e-cigarettes by teens is deeply troubling,” said Tom Frieden, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes.”

Ten percent of US high-schoolers admitted having tried e-cigs last year, up from 4.7 percent in 2011, according to a survey released Thursday by the National Youth Tobacco Survey.

The number of middle-school students who tried them also doubled, rising from 1.4 percent in 2011 to 2.7 percent last year.

And last year, 2.8 percent of high-schoolers said they had used them within the past 30 days, up from 1.5 percent in 2011. For middle- schoolers, the number rose from 0.6 to 1.1 percent.

“These results are alarming, but not surprising,” Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said, noting that the battery-powered devices, which deliver nicotine in a vapor, have been touted as a safer alternative to traditional smoking.

“The e-cigarette industry portrays itself as wanting to help solve the tobacco problem, but its marketing is reminiscent of the tobacco industry in its worst days.”

Not since the days when Joe Camel shilled cancer sticks for Big Tobacco have health officials been so concerned about young people getting hooked on smoking.

But with Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlie Sheen seen puffing the cigs in photos across the Web, who needs a cartoon mascot?

“When it comes to smoking, smelling like an ashtray is not the ideal aphrodisiac,” McCarthy says in a Web video for blu eCigs.
