In this digital age it seems more and more products are
being digitised, from books to music, everything is having a digital makeover.
Smoking could well be the next commodity to undergo a digital revolution. We
are talking about electronic cigarettes. Invented in 2003 by Chinese pharmacist
Hon Lik as an alternative to smoking, they have gained in popularity over
recent years. E-cigarettes have been in the press a lot recently after the
decision was announced that they are to be regulated by 2016 as a medicine.
So how do they work? Electronic
cigarettes are battery powered vaping devices which heat an e-liquid solution
inside the device until it reaches the correct temperature to become a vapour.
This water-based nicotine vapour can then be inhaled and exhaled by users in a
similar way to smoking traditional cigarettes. The water vapour released has a
similar appearance to smoke and some are designed to look like cigarettes
adding to the illusion that people using them are smoking, when they are in
fact vaping.
The e-liquid solution inside
e-cigarettes is available in a variety of nicotine strengths and different
flavours. The nicotine offers users a similar so called “hit” comparable to
smoking and the same hand to mouth physical action which is familiar to many smokers. An electronic cigarette does not contain
tobacco and is not affected by the UK smoking ban. Legally you are free to vape
indoors; however, it is up to the discretion of individual businesses whether
or not they allow it.
There are lots of different brands
and devices on the market including disposable e-cigarettes designed to be
thrown away after use. Another option are rechargeable devices which can be
refilled and recharged and provide a cost-effective e-cigarette product.
As electronic cigarettes continue
to grow in popularity and feature regularly in the media, there are a whole
range of terms used when talking about e-cigarettes that can be confusing.
Below is a handy glossary of the most common words or phrases:
Atomiser: Component inside the
e-cigarette which heats the e-liquid solution.
Cartomiser: Disposable refill
cartridges designed to be thrown away and replaced when empty.
Electronic Cigarette: Battery
powered vaping device, also referred to as an e-cig or e-cigarette.

Refill Capsule: Holds the
e-liquid solution, some can be re-used.
